An Electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a simple painless noninvasive test offered at the New York Cardiac Diagnostic Center in ManhattanAn ECG records the rhythm and electrical activity of the heart. The cardiologist close by you, Dr. Steven Reisman, may recommend an ECG for patients who may be at risk of heart disease because there is a family history of heart disease, or because they smoke, are overweight, or have diabetes, high cholesterol or high blood pressure. Additionally, a primary doctor may recommend an ECG if a patient is experiencing symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or fast or irregular heartbeats (palpitations). ECGs are often performed to monitor the health of patients who have been diagnosed with heart problems, to help assess artificial cardiac pacemakers or to monitor the effects of certain medications on the heart.

During the ECG test electrodes will be attached to your arms, legs and chest. The electrodes (sticky patches applied with a gel) will connect to some wires to help detect and conduct the electrical currents of your heart.  This important test normally only takes a few minutes.

The cardiologist will look for a consistent, even heart rhythm and a heart rate between 50 and 100 beats a minute.

The NYC Cardiologist, Dr. Steven Reisman, may use an ECG to detect:

  • Heart rhythm
  • Heart rate
  • Congenital heart defects involving the conducting (electrical) system
  • Find the cause of unexplained chest pain, such as from a heart attack, inflammation of the sac surrounding the heart (pericarditis), or angina
  • Irregularities in your heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
  • Heart defects
  • Enlargement of the heart
  • Problems with your heart’s valves
  • Blocked or narrowed arteries in your heart (coronary artery disease)
  • A heart attack, in emergency situations
  • A previous heart attack
  • Inadequate blood and oxygen supply to the heart.
  • Assess the heart’s electrical activity for any abnormalities
  • Assess the cause of symptoms of heart disease, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, fainting, or rapid, irregular heartbeats (palpitations)
  • Find out if the walls of the heart chambers are too thick (hypertrophied)
  • Heart inflammation – pericarditis or myocarditis
  • Assess the health of the heart when other diseases or conditions are present, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cigarette smoking, diabetes, or a family history of early heart disease

Vascular Disease Screening
by StevenReisman
Sep 25, 2020 | 122 views | 0 0 comments | 16 16 recommendations | email to a friend | print | permalink

The New York Cardiac Diagnostic Center offers Carotid Vascular Ultrasound testing (sometimes referred to as a “duplex study”) of the carotid arteries which is a simple, safe and painless in-office test that produces pictures of blood circulation using sound waves.

A vascular ultrasound is safe, noninvasive, effective, and painless. (It’s the same technology used to image babies in the womb of pregnant women.)

This cardiac test is primarily used to determine if an individual has significant plaque in the carotid artery which would increase the risk of stroke.

Vascular disease screening is a painless, noninvasive test.

The ultrasound takes about 30 minutes to complete. Please plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment to complete the registration process.

Sudden Cardiac Death Screening Tests
by StevenReisman
Sep 25, 2020 | 162 views | 0 0 comments | 7 7 recommendations | email to a friend | print | permalink

Sudden cardiac death screening tests are offered by the heart doctor NYC specialist, Dr. Steven Reisman, a best rated cardiologist at the New York Cardiac Diagnostic Center. Sudden cardiac death, which can have multiple causes, accounts for the largest cause of natural death – approximately 350,000 deaths per year in the United States – topping deaths from lung cancer, breast cancer, and AIDS.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is a sudden, unexpected death caused by loss of heart function (sudden cardiac arrest). Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is responsible for half of all heart disease deaths.

Sudden cardiac death occurs most frequently in adults in their mid-30s to mid-40s, and affects men twice as often as it does women. This heart condition is very rare in children, affecting only 1 to 2 per 100,000 children each year.

Dr. Reisman and his entire staff are the best in New York City. I was able to get an appointment quickly and didn’t have to wait to see Dr. Reisman long for my appointment (less than 5 minutes). I had a very positive experience and thrilled to have found such a great Cardiologist. I am a very anxious patient and the staff was very compassionate from the front desk to all the technicians to Dr. Reisman. I would highly recommend this heart specialist to friends and family! ~ Google

The heart conditions that the NYC cardiologist will check for that can lead to sudden cardiac death include:

  • Arrhythmia
  • Coronary artery disease. Most cases of sudden cardiac arrest occur in people who have coronary artery disease
  • A prior heart attack
  • Enlarged heart (cardiomyopathy)
  • Valvular heart disease
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Cardiomyopathy- when your heart muscle becomes enlarged or thick, so it’s weakened.
  • Electrical problems in your heart: primary heart rhythm abnormalities and include conditions such as Brugada’s syndrome and long QT syndrome.

Endo-PAT Cardiac Testing
by StevenReisman
Sep 25, 2020 | 532 views | 0 0 comments | 34 34 recommendations | email to a friend | print | permalink

The New York Cardiac Diagnostic Center offers EndoPAT™ testing in cardiology nearby locations. This cardiac test provides the earliest method to clinically detect cardiovascular disease. EndoPAT testing is used to detect changes in the condition of the inner lining of your blood vessels as well as diagnosing your risk for a heart attack. This important cardiac test is an innovative, safe and non-invasive diagnostic device for functional vascular health assessment for both large and small arteries.

If the best in class cardiologist, Dr. Steven Reisman, uncovers that your endothelial cells appear to be damaged it can be an indication of the early signs of heart disease and the risk for a heart attack, which are potentially reversible when treated. These cells may become damaged by a fatty diet, smoking, stress hypertension, being over-weight, diabetes or lack of exercise.

Dr. Reisman and his team are very well-organized, thorough, reliable and courteous. Dr. Reisman listens to my concerns carefully and uses the latest technology to examine me. I’m highly impressed by his performance. I would definitely give Dr. Reisman a five-star rating and wholeheartedly recommend him to anyone. ~ ZocDoc

The EndoPAT® is a state of the art medical device used worldwide for the diagnosis and prevention of cardiovascular disease, a medical device cleared by the FDA for the assessment of endothelial function.

Causes of Cardiac Events by Demographics Include (Reasons to be Tested):

  • Firefighters: Cardiovascular disease, intense prolonged physical stress, and psychological stress.
  • Athletes: Coronary heart disease, blunt force trauma to the chest cavity, and physical stress
  • Adult Population: Morbid obesity, lifestyle (smoking, alcohol, recreational drugs), coronary artery disease, previous heart attach

As one of the ultimate non-invasive diagnostic cardiac tools, the EndoPAT cardiac test has the potential to become the “heart’s mammogram” by helping asses heart disease risk and alerting patients to initiate preventive steps to keep it from progressing. This cardiac test is uniquely performed at the fingertip and proven to be accurate, sensitive and reproducible. Testing takes less than 30 minutes and is done by a simple, noninvasive procedure in the NYC cardiologists’s office.

Steven Reisman MD, who has been featured on Fox and CNN, is the founder and Director of the New York Cardiac Diagnostic Center which has a patient focused philosophy.

Dr. Reisman is a Cardiologist and a nationally recognized Nuclear Cardiologist who was part of the team at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, instrumental in developing many of the early techniques in nuclear cardiology. Dr. Reisman was part of a group of select investigators with the Food And Drug Administration evaluating intravenous dipyridamole thallium testing prior to approval of this technique for general use in patients who cannot exercise.

Dr. Reisman has authored or co-authored numerous publications and has presented original research results at both the American College of Cardiology annual meetings and the American Heart Association annual meetings related to early detection of “high risk” heart disease, the evaluation of patients without symptoms with underlying heart blockages including those with “silent ischemia”, the prognosis of patients with blockages, use of dipyridamole thallium testing in patients who cannot exercise to identify severe blockages, detection of severe coronary artery disease in the elderly, and the evaluation of heart disease in patients who cannot walk secondary to a circulatory problem.
