Laparoscopic Surgery
Improved technology, faster healing
You’ve just been diagnosed with a condition requiring surgery. Until very recently your options only included traditional surgery with a large open incision. Today laparoscopy is a safer option. Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive surgery that uses small incisions. However, it is typically limited to very simple procedures.
What is Laparoscopic Surgery?
Minimally invasive surgical procedures avoid open invasive surgery. Instead, closed or local surgery results in less trauma. These gynecologic procedures can often be done vaginally or with the use of laparoscopic instruments. Laparoscopy allows observation of the surgical field through an endoscope or similar device. This type of surgery is carried out through small incisions in the skin. These incisions allow access to the pelvis or abdomen. Smaller incisions result in shorter hospital stays, or allow outpatient treatment.
What is the Purpose of a Laparoscopic Procedure?
Laparoscopy can be done for the diagnosis or treatment of several diseases. Diagnosis of endometriosis, chronic pelvic pain, pelvic inflammation, or infertility can be done with a laparoscopic procedure.
Certain cancers such as ovarian, uterus, and cervix cancer can be diagnoses with this minimally invasive procedure. Fibroids, cysts, lymph nodes, or ectopic pregnancy can be removed through laparoscopy.
What is the Recovery Time After Laparoscopic Procedure?
After your surgery, you may feel soreness at the incision site. This should go away after about 3-4 days. Recovery largely depends on your own health. Some people feel better and choose to return to work the next day. Others, take a few extra days to recover.
While you are still recovering don’t lift anything heavy or engage in any strenuous activity. This will give your body time to heal the incisions. Day by day you can begin walking more and more. Walking increases your blood flow and helps you heal faster. It is also important to maintain a healthy diet. If you feel sick, try eating bland foods and drink plenty of clear fluids.
You can take a shower during your recovery but avoid taking a bath. You may experience some vaginal bleeding. This is normal. You can wear a pad until it goes away. You can also use a heating pad on your belly to ease the pain.

We’re sure you have many questions regarding the LEEP procedure. We want you to feel comfortable and be well informed. Please feel free to call us at 718 369-1900 with any questions you may have about OB/GYN Services. Below we have answered some frequently asked questions.
What Is LEEP?
How Effective Is LEEP?
If LEEP does not cure your problem, you may have LEEP again, or your health care provider may recommend another treatment.
How Does LEEP work?
• You lie down on an exam table in the same position used to have a Pap test.
• A speculum — a metal or plastic instrument — is inserted into your vagina to separate the walls.
• A numbing medication is injected into your cervix.
• A vinegar-like solution is applied to make the abnormal cells more visible.
• The health care provider uses an electrical wire loop to remove the abnormal tissue. The tissue is sent to a lab to be tested.
