Some establishments sacrifice either preparation speed or nutritional content, to the detriment of their customers.
At Liv Salad in Astoria, which opened this past Friday at 31-86 37th Street, the primary question customers must answer is not whether they want to compromise speed or nutrition, but whether they want their healthy meal to be served in salad, bowl or toast form.
Liv’s products give pause to the presumption that eating nutritiously is a flavorless experience.
An on-hand chef was brought on to challenge the idea of what a delicious salad can be, including the bright taste of freshly-squeezed citrus, the variety of bases from kale to quinoa and deliberately chosen non-traditional salad accompaniments that create a full-bodied and unique salad, like falafel and hummus.
For instance, the popular Buddha bowl is composed of kale, wild rice, falafel, advocado, cucumbers, red onion, tomatoes, red cabbage, hummus, fresh squeezed lemon and tahini dressing.
For those who like to choose their own adventure in salad tossing, there is the option to build a custom bowl. Customers can select from six green bases, 18 toppings and cheeses, six proteins, and nine house-made dressings, starting at $8.75.
For the carb-inclined, there is the option to have different toasts, such as the universal crowd-pleaser, avocado toast, on daily, freshly-baked vegan breads.
All options are prepared and served in a matter of minutes, allowing for either a quick lunch or a casual spot to sit and enjoy healthy foods.
When selecting its organic produce, Liv Salad tries to source locally whenever possible. In an effort to be sustainable, all foodware, from forks to bowls and cups, is fully compostable.
Created by the owners of the cookie bakery Chip NYC, the founders saw a need in Astoria for more healthy options that provides speedy service without compromising the taste or nutritional aspects of their products.
While Chip NYC has expanded to three locations in Queens, with one more on the way, Liv Salad’s owners are focusing their attention exclusively on a singular location so that customers know that the quality of their product is emphasized over any potential franchising opportunities.
Liv Salad is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays through Saturdays.
