The recession is taking its toll on after school programs around the country, but not in North Brooklyn, where the Greenpoint YMCA’s after school program is still going strong.
On the tenth anniversary celebration of Lights on Afterschool, a national advocacy day, parents, teachers and students gathered at the Greenpoint YMCA for an afternoon of games, arts and science activities.
The Greenpoint YMCA offers after school care at four facilities throughout Greenpoint and Williamsburg. The YMCA of Greater New York has recommitted to last year’s $13 million after-school program.
“In these stressful times, more parents than ever are counting on the Y After School as a partner in raising strong and healthy kids,” said Jack Lund, Greater YMCA’s president and CEO.
“The path to positive growth does not end with each school day, and we are proud of our commitment to providing every child the chance to grow strong physically, mentally and spiritually,” he added.
“Offering parents a safe place for their kids to go is just the beginning of our work,” said Tammea Tyler, the senior program director for the Greenpoint YMCA. “We strive to help the ‘whole child’ grow stronger, through academics, recreation and values.”
