USPS Parking Request Concerns Residents

North Brooklyn residents are concerned that a United States Postal Service request to park USPS vehicles on Marcy Avenue will take much-needed parking away from the community.

A USPS representative explained at a Community Board 1 meeting on April 10 that while its office on South 4th Street has 30 vehicles, it only has space to accommodate 10. USPS hopes to partner with the Department of Transportation to create space for the trucks along Marcy Avenue in an effort to solve this problem.

The plan will be presented to the Community Board 1 Transportation Committee for further discussion at a meeting on May 14.

Take a walking tour of the entire Newtown Creek

Have you ever been curious what the Newtown Creek looks, smells and feels like from both ends?

Here’s your opportunity. The Newtown Creek Alliance is hosting its second annual walking tour of the entire creek on Sunday, April 15.

The tour will go from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., spanning two boroughs and multiple neighborhoods. It will begin in Long Island City and end in Greenpoint, but also pass by Blissville, Maspeth, Ridgewood, East Williamsburg and Bushwick.

Learn about the history of the creek, including how a giant oil spill and manufacturing polluted the waterbody.

Your guides on this tour will be Mitch Waxman and Willis Elkins from NCA.

There will be a bathroom and food break along the way. Last year, the tour stopped at Goodfellas Diner in Maspeth.

Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable, sturdy and toed shoes, as well as hats, sunglasses and sunscreen. Bring a water bottle for good measure.

Race Header Sri Chinmoy 5K & 7-Mile in Prospect Park

Join the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team in cooperation with the Prospect Park Alliance and NYC Parks Department on Sunday, March 11 for the Sri Chinmoy 5K & 7-mile race, featuring a scenic loop course around the park.

The Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team was formed in 1977 by students of the Indian meditation master, author, poet and philosopher Sri Chinmoy.

A champion athlete in the Indian spiritual community where he had lived for 20 years before coming to America, Sri Chinmoy felt that sport was a natural aid to well being.

At the time of the Marathon Team’s founding, Sri Chinmoy was encouraging his students to increase their physical fitness as a natural complement to their meditation practice.

Although Chinmoy passed away in 2007, the Marathon Team has continued to be a standard bearer for his vision of realizing human potential through sports.

Be a part of Chinmoy’s legacy by taking part in the 5k and 7-mile races! Register early as spots fill up quickly!

Number pickup will be on race day only, between 9:00 – 9:45 AM and both races will start at 10 am.

Stick around for the post-race pancake breakfast! Hot pancakes are even more enjoyable after you’ve run a race, and they’re free!
