The Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund is now taking proposals to fund up to $1.2 million in environmental improvement projects.

GCEF’s priorities include improving water quality, groundwater, open space, toxic pollution and air quality.

Projects that can show these qualities will have a leg up:

• Sustain past GCEF-funded projects by supporting maintenance or enhancing community engagement
• Extend past GCEF-funded projects by targeting a new area of Greenpoint
• Implement a new project with environmental benefits for Greenpoint.

Funds may not be used for political advocacy, fundraising, lobbying or litigation.

Grants can range in size from $25,000 to $100,000.

Eligible applicants include 501(c) nonprofit organizations, local government and academic institutions.

Proposals are due by March 15, 2018.

On Saturday, January 6, 2018 A Drinking Game NYC will do a live reading of Clueless. Doors open at 6:30 pm.

What’s “A Drinking Game”? Well, take your favorite 80s or 90s flick, mix in a live staged reading, add a dash of your favorite beverage, and you’ve got one hell of a cocktail.

Talented actors perform cult classics for a live audience. One night only. A new show every month–comedies like The Princess Bride, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters.

Each movie comes with a list of buzzwords and phrases–when you hear one, a bell rings and everybody drinks! The actors are in on the fun, too. Plus, when someone says a name, the actor playing that character has to drink. So as the evening progresses, the show’s bound to get a little wacky.

The 21st annual Brooklyn Three Kings Parade has been pushed back to Sunday, January 21 due to inclement weather.

After the “bomb cyclone” of 2018, the streets and sidewalks are in no condition for a parade.

But the celebration must go on…in two weeks! Meet at Graham Avenue and Meeker Avenue in what should be an exciting parade!

 

On Saturday and Sunday, January 6 and 7, 2018 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm, bring your holiday tree to a designated city park to be recycled into mulch that will nourish plantings across the city!

Join NYC Parks, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree. More than 26,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

You can bring your tree to a chipping location on January 6 and 7 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We’ll chip your tree, and give you your very own bag of mulch!

You can also bring your tree to a drop-off site from Sunday, December 31, 2017 through Sunday, January 7, 2018. Leave your tree with us, and we’ll recycle it for you later! The NYC Department of Sanitation will also be conducting special curbside collections for mulching and recycling of Christmas trees from Tuesday, January 2, 2018 through Saturday, January 13, 2018.

A new year means newborns at each hospital in our borough.

You may have heard that Brooklyn’s first baby of 2018 was Joshua Miguel Brito, born to Erica Hernandez and Joshua Brito at Woodhull Hospital.

He was born 6 pounds, 14 ounces.

At New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, their first baby of the new year was Aarya Datar, born at 6:49 a.m.

Aarya weighs 7 pounds, 10 ounces. She was born to Praveen Datar and Vandkode Kulkarni, who live in Crown Heights. Her 17-month-old sister Aadhya was there to say hello to her baby sister.

“We are so thrilled to welcome Aarya into the world,” Kulkarni said. “We feel very special to have one of the first babies of the New Year.”

Over at NYU Langone Hospital, Wilmer De Los Santos Asencio was born at 4:11 a.m. Here he is pictured with his mother, Tirsia Maria Asencio De Los Santos.

Baby Wilmer weighed 5 pounds, 10 ounces. He will return home to Sunset Park with his mom, father Wilson and 17-year-old brother Jonas.

 

On January 4th Brooklyn Bowl, at 61 Wythe Avenue presents an All-Star Tribute to Malcolm Young of AC/DC.  The event will feature performances from Walter Schreifels, Lena Hall, and Timo Ellis and many more!

Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 8 pm.

Gather ‘roud on Sunday, December 31st at 2:15 pm to watch The Great American Comedy, “Some Like it Hot”!

This New Year’s Eve, Videology Bar & Cinema at 308 Bedford Avenue, will be hosting a Classic Hollywood NYE Bash inspired by some of our favorite leading ladies, including Marilyn Monroe! The event will have specialty cocktails and all your favorite vintage party favors including hats, streamers, and confetti popper. So make sure you arrive early and/or stick around for the full effect!

On Saturday, December 30th Brooklyn Bazaar, at 150 Greenpoint Avenue, presents NYC’s Tragedy: All Metal Tribute to the Bee Gees & Beyond. At 8 pm join WYLDLIFE– the #1 Party Band for some of your favorite hits.  Hailing from the Netherlands, these fearsome brothers fearlessly obliterated the truce line that had been set in the great Disco/Metal Peace accord of 1977. Together they seamlessly blended the two genres with their debut album, We Rock Sweet Balls and Can Do No Wrong – a collection of Bee Gees songs redone in a heavy metal treatment reminiscent of Judas Priest, Motley Crue, and Guns N Roses.
